Gino Barbieri

Cesena, 1885 - Montezomo, 1917

Gino Barbieri carried out an intens artistic activity, as a painter, angraier and illustrator. His formative years take place in Florence, at the Accademia delle Bell Arti, where he attend as the courser held by Alfonso De Carolis on the ornate, whith whom he worked on the frescos in Palazzo del Podestà in Bologna. His artistica style was influenced, expecially at the beginning, by nineteenth century naturalism and by "sketchung".

Later Barbieri meets naturalism urth symbolist suggestiveness and the patches of colours approach the separation of shades that is tipycal of divisionism. He collaborated urts the magazine "L'Eroica" as an illustrator, and also the editions of works by Giovanni Pascoli and Gabriele D'Annunzio, in fact he had met him in venice, where he, soldier during the period of first world war, had been despatched, and whilst there he carried out a portsait usibg the xilographic technique.

During the periond spent on the battle front, in the trenches, Barbieri continued engrewing crude scens of military life described in tragic style. Many of his works are collected together in the art gallery of the Cesena bank "Cassa di risparmio" and also in th Curc Art Gallery, where apart from the paintings, the are a further two hundred pieces including designs, xilographic and etchings.
