Mario Schifano

Homs (Libia), 1934 - Roma, 1998

Having moved to Rome from Libia with his family, he works from 1954 with his father on archaeologist and restorer at the Etruscan Museum in Valle Giulia. At the same time he takes up painting. In 1960 he exhibits his first monochrome paintings in in obtains 1962, his first international recognition with the invitation o take part in the exhibition "The News Realists" held in New York.

Soon Schifano approaches Pop Art, which brings him to revisit in a pop key the futurist iconography, and using to create her works initials takes from publicity repertory, photographs and innovative technologies like movie cameras and videotapes.

After about a decade of profound existential crisis, he approaches the theme of nature in the eighties and takes part in most important international exhibition in Paris, Venice and Milan and hold various personal (Buenos Aires, Berlin, Brussels and Rome.
