Giovan Battista Piazzetta

Venezia, 1683 - 1754

Great protagonist of the 18th century Venetian art style, Piazzetta began his studies in the workshop of Antonio Molinari; later he moved to Bologna, specialising in the portrayal of popular subjects, whilst at the workshop of Giuseppe Maria Crespi. On his return to Venice he became part of the so-called stream of tenebrosi, which was characterised by a dramatic use and strong impact of light & shade in opposition to the current of the pale shades. However, from the 1730s onward the chiaroscuro effect becomes less intense. His Sacrificio di Ifigenia is exhibited in the Gallery.
