Luciano Caldari (Savignano sul Rubicone,
1925) - Olio su tela; cm 45 x 86
This painting is signed and dated 1952, the year in which Caldari sojourned in Calabria in order to observe and reproduce in aft the trials and tribulations of the lower working classes.
The artist embraces heartily in this work, themes like social denouncement of the poor peoples condition, which are characterized in the Neo-Realist movement.
Five sailors are dragging a large boat across the beach; the figures are all positioned on oblique lines which are really effective in rendering the idea of movement and the strain of the effort they have to make in order to carry out their job. Broad fast strokes express the space in which the action takes place, with a beautiful contrast between the deep blue sea and the sky and the warm beige of the sand.
