The painting, dated 1951, and signed in the bottom right hard part of the picture, belongs to the Neo-Realist period and emphasises the workers social conditions. In the foreground a worker is doing his job using two humble tools; a spade and a wheelbarrow.
In the background an enormous mound of salt towers above another worker intent at his job. Farther in the distance, another candid mound of salt.
The colours are cold and the shading of hues clear cut and contrasting thanks to the intense natural light
