Giovanni Francesco Barbieri, known as Guercino (Cento, 1591 - Bologna, 1666) - Oil on canvas; cm 271 x 190
The painting was commissioned by Capuchin friars in Cesena to Giovan Francesco Barbieri, better known as Guercino (squint eyed).
After the invasion of Napoleon, the painting was taken to Milan and it only came back to Cesena in 1816. Now, it is with the Capuchin friars again. The saint is on his knees in front of a Cross, with his arms lifted to the sky. We can see the stigmata on his hands. In the background there is a friar who is reading a book. The subject is typical of the Counter-Reformation and of Guercino's workshop, the typology being a solitary figure in prayer.
