Ritratto di Papa Pio VI

Anonymous (18th century) - Oil on canvas; cm 230 x 150

Ritratto di Papa Pio VI

The painting done around 1775 is very similar to the portrait now housed in Palazzo Braschi in Rome, carried out by Pompeo Batoni. The subject is represented in his study wearing the typical pontifical clothes while he is showing the project for the drainage of the Pontine Marshes and for the Basilica of Saint Peter's. In the background behind him we can see the Cesena landscape characterised by the Ponte Vecchio and the River Savio, painted with great realism and care.
