Antonio Pio

Cesena, 1809 - London, 1871

Antonio Pio began his studies as a youth and is reported by local historians and artists of his epoch as being gifted. He was probably one of the few painters to whom we can attribute as having a certain influence on nineteenth century Cesena art.

He studied in Rome at the Accademia di San Luca under the direction of Tommaso Minardi, worked in Cesena during the fourties, after which he moved around for many years, between the cities of Florence, Paris and London, where he died in 1871.

Antonio Pio tends in his works to remain true to historical and literary themes in particular, although he demonstrated that he was also a good portrait painter, also dabbling in genre painting as can be seen in the case of Pastorello, a piece contained in the Gallery. Other works carried out during his time in Cesena include the drop curtain in the Municipal theatre, in which the apoteosi di Dante Alighieri is depicted.
