Scipione Sacco (Sogliano sul Rubicone, 1495 - Cesena, 1558) - Oils on wood; cm 280 x 170
Scipione Sacco painted this picture in 1537. It was intended for the church of Saint Dominic by the Lancetti family.
The painting illustrates Christ sitting on a throne and the Saints Paul, Raphael, Thomas d'Aquinus (on the left), Andrew, the archangel Raphael and Tobiolo (on the right) standing in front of him. On the throne there is an inscription with the name of the person who had commissioned that work. The figures of all the Saints are statuesque, but the lines of Raphael's body are wavy and in movement we find the following inscriptions: : MATHEVS LANCETA/ ET CHRISTINA AB/ ARMIS CONSORTES/ PIA RELIGIONE/ HOC SACELLVM./ DICARVNT./ .M.D./ XXXVII
, and on the right in the lower part: PA...BAZZOCCHI PROPRIETAS
.
From documents of the period, we learn that according to the wishes of his commissioners Sacco, depicted the family dog in the centre of the foreground.
