The portrait was painted by Giuseppe Milani in 1739, as the inscription on the left of the work indicates (...SEPH MILANI PARMENSIS PINX...ANNO 1739)

The subject represented is Giuseppe della Massa who wears armour with a sword on his left and a wig on his head. The background is very dark and it seems to represent a landscape hinted at on the right and a pillar on the left. The subject points to something in the far distance, perhaps at houses or encampments.
