Giovanni Battista Bertucci the younger, called the painters' Giovan Battista (Faenza, 1539 - 1614) - Oil on canvas; cm 56 x 44
The painting was given to the Municipal Administration of Cesena by the Bocchini family at the end of the 19th Century. Given its rather limited dimensions we can suppose it was a work destined privately, or possibly, the sketch for a much larger painting.
The picture represents Christ's dead body supported by the Virgin, St. John the Evangelist and the kneeling Magdalene. Behind them St. Joseph from Arimatea and St. Nicodemus in a natural background in which can be seen, the town of Jerusalem and the crosses on Mt. Calvary.
The colours are rather pale because of the bad preservation of the painting, although the figures depicted are illuminated by a suffused light.
