Enea Peroni (Cesena, 1810 c. - doc. to 1844) - Oil on canvas; cm 170 x 205
The painting was done by Enea Peroni, in 1839, as demonstrates the inscription on the left: Enea Peroni cesenate fecit anno 1839
.
The work, which is a tribute from the people of Cesena to the Pope, represents a real event that happened in 1814, when Pius VII, on his return from Rome, arrived in Cesena, his home town.
In the canvas we can find various characters, who we can divide into different groups: on the left, in a carriage in the act of blessing is Pope Pius VII Chiaramonti, as the family emblem on the carriage demonstrates. In the lower part, there are some prelates and the authority of the city, in the lower part of the picture. In the foreground, on the right is the nobility kneeling to the Pope. In the background the crowd, which is composed by the people and by musicians, joyfully accompanying the triumphal entrance of the Pope.
The landscape is represented by some hills. The Basilica del Monte can be seen on the highest one. There are also some architectonical elements like to palace, at whose windows we can find some people, crowding and also an arch.
