Francesco Longhi (?) (Ravenna, 1554 - 1618) - Oil on canvas; cm 65 x 50
Documented at the end of the 16th Century, this work represents a unique character: Nicolò I Masini, a very famous doctor in Cesena and this is demonstrated by the inscription NICOLO MASINI I (S) PHILO(S) ED CAES
.
The harsh image, is based on strict rules of behaviour, diffused in the post-Tridentina society. A deep restlessness is underlined and reflected in this painting based on the rules of the Counter-Reformation, according to which portraits were to represent honour, seriousness and decorum.
