Giovan Battista Salvi, known as Sassoferrato

Sassoferrato, 1609 - Roma, 1685

Giovan Battista Salvi, known as Sassoferrato, from his birthplace, where he probably began his studies in the workshop of his father, later moving to Rome and studying under Domenichino.

The study of the work of the great 15th and 16th century masters was fundamental in his formation.

He worked almost exclusively in Rome, where he became rich and famous, thanks to the production of numerous compositions based on the figure of the Virgin Mary, devotional objects, destined in most cases, to private commissions, as in the case of the canvasses depicting Arcangelo Gabriele; Vergine Annunciata, Vergine in preghiera con gli occhi rivolti verso il cielo, Vergine Addolorata and Madonna con il Bambino. All of which are contained in the Gallery.
